Do I need therapy for anxiety?

Most people don’t know that anxiety can actually be quite healthy.

If we weren’t a bit anxious about failing a test, we might not study.  If we didn’t worry about our health, we might not exercise.  And, if we didn’t feel nervous about what the future will hold, we might not plan ahead.  Anxiety is designed to be a motivational emotional experience, one that helps us be productive and driven.

However, too much of anything can be a bad thing.  When we have too much or carry it for too long, anxiety becomes unhealthy.  Unhealthy anxiety keeps us from being productive, feeling relaxed, and enjoying life to the fullest.

Some of the most common signs of unhealthy anxiety include:

Unhealthy anxiety causes problems.

When you can’t focus, you forget things.  When you can’t relax, you constantly feel exhausted.  When you are constantly irritable and cranky, people might withdraw from you.  All of these problems just give you more reasons to feel anxious.

Thankfully, therapy can help.  If you or a loved one are overwhelmed with anxiety, seek professional care.

How can therapy for anxiety help?

Anxiety is not a comfortable emotion, which is why we typically try to avoid feeling it.

If an assignment at school or work makes you too anxious, you might put it off until the last minute.  If work makes you feel stressed out and overwhelmed, you might try to numb out with television or food.  Or, if you are worried about having an argument with your friend or partner, you might do whatever it takes to avoid conflict.

When we avoid our anxious feelings, it’s so relieving.

For a while.

Over time, this pattern of avoidance increases the intensity of anxious feelings.  The mind remembers how good it felt to avoid the thing that made you anxious, which means you’ll feel even more anxious the next time the stressor emerges.  As the anxious thoughts and feelings continue to grow, your mind begins to anticipate future discomforts.  What will happen tomorrow?  What if people don’t like me?  Am I going anywhere with my life?

Therapy for anxiety helps you break the pattern of avoidance, calm the mind and body, and find a greater sense of direction.  You get the chance to work one-on-one with a compassionate, skilled anxiety expert as you learn to understand yourself and find solutions to life’s struggles.

No one should have to struggle with fear and worry.  Everyone deserves a chance to thrive.  Therapy can help make that happen.

What is therapy for anxiety like with Devin?

I am here for you.

All therapy sessions are completely confidential. I am able to hold therapy sessions online for safety and convenience at this time, if that is preferable to you.  You and I will work collaboratively to help you reach your goals as efficiently and effectively as possible.  I strive to help you feel understood, supported, and cared for as you work to enhance your wellbeing.

I want to help you understand the underlying thoughts and feelings that hold you back from the life you want.  I want to help you process negativity, unload from stress, and reach a place of freedom.  I want to help you find direction and purpose despite the challenges that life has thrown your way.
